COMMEMORATING 100 YEARS SINCE IRELAND FOUGHT TO BE FREE WITH THE STAGING OF SEAN O’CASEY’S ICONIC NATIONALIST PLAY
THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN
2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising: the pivotal event in the independence of the Irish where the leaders of the Irish Republican Army and their 1500 volunteers took over the streets and buildings of Dublin on Easter weekend, 1916. It was outside the General Post Office during this demonstration that IRA leader Patrick Pearse first read the declaration of the Irish Republic.
As part of the international commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising, Foundry Theatre and the Irish Australian Support Association Queensland are working together to produce Sean O’Casey’s classic play The Shadow of a Gunman.
The Shadow of a Gunman premiered in April 1923 in Dublin, one month before the end of the Irish Civil War, which directly followed the events of 1916. The subsequent War of Independence the Easter Rising had, eventually ignited. The play deals with the rhetoric and dangers of patriotism, the abject poverty of tenement life, the weight of self?deception, and the cost of survival.
Founded in 2015, Foundry Theatre is a committed ensemble of directors, writers, actors, producers, dreamers and explorers. We exist to question, to inspire and to demonstrate the cultural necessity of rich, relevant theatre for a diverse contemporary audience.
With support from the Irish Australian Support Association of Queensland, Foundry Theatre is proud to present two exclusive performances of this classic play, in recognition of the important role the Irish people have played in the formation of today’s multicultural Australia.
